Export pallets are plastic pallets or skids that are used to ship products between countries with different pallet size standards. Companies that ship products internationally can be subject to taxes related to packaging weight and volume if they do not meet a given country’s pallet size standards.

Different countries have different standards for pallet sizes and weights. The Euro pallet standard, for example, provides guidelines for four palette configurations. The most common of these four sizes is the Pallet EUR, which is also known a "whole pallet." The size for the Pallet EUR is 800mm x 1200mm (31.5in x 47.24in). The most widely accepted standard pallet size in the United States is the Grocery Manufacturer's Association pallet, which measures 48in x 40in and is one of the six pallet sizes officially recognized by the International Organization for Standardization (the EUR is another recognized size). When American companies ship products using pallets that are appropriate for their country of destination, they enjoy several benefits. The most tangible benefit is the reduced expense for the recipient, as the pallets can be reused for other purposes (in many cases, pallets that arrive in Europe from America must be disposed of because they are useless there). Those companies also avoid recent taxes designed by European governments to cut down on excessive packaging.
Any product that simplifies or expedites shipping is valuable. Export pallets solve some problems for companies that ship internationally, but the benefits of using export pallets can be compounded for companies if the pallets are made of plastic. Plastic export pallets can be exempted from customs bio-safety inspections and often do not require any kind of treatment or coating. Unlike wooden pallets, which are porous and are susceptible to becoming habitats for organisms like E. Coli and Listeria, plastic pallets are non-porous and don't provide a home for pathogens. Many are impervious to acids, fats, solvents and odors and are resistant to water absorption. Plastic export pallets are lightweight, low-cost, and can be designed in light-weight configurations that don't sacrifice strength or durability. Most plastic pallets are made of high-density polyethylene, or HDPE, so almost all plastic pallets are also recyclable. There are, however, some circumstances in which plastic is not an appropriate pallet material. In applications where pallets must support extremely heavy materials, a cost-benefit analysis may reveal that a destroyed product seated on a ruined plastic pallet may be costlier than investing in a near-indestructible metal pallet, most of which are very heavy (especially in large quantities) and expensive, but are generally fail-safe.
