Ferrules Industry Information

Ferrules

A ferrule is a device used to cover, join, fasten, reinforce, or shield many different objects. For example, the metal cylinder that holds the eraser on the end of a pencil is a ferrule. These devices are typically made from metal and are created using deep drawn metal stamping processes.

Ferrules Design

Ferrules can take on several different shapes and configurations, but they typically take the form of a short circular tube. To use the ferrule, it must be clamped down on the objects it is holding. This can be accomplished in several different ways. For lightweight ferrules, a crimping tool, or even pliers, can be used to clamp the metal down onto the objects to be held, fastened, or shielded. Swaging is also a common method for tightening ferrules. This method is generally used for heavy duty ferrules. Ferrules can also be manufactured from essentially any metal to meet the demands of many different applications. Common metals used in manufacturing ferrules include: stainless steel, brass, copper, bronze, and aluminum. Rubber, plastic, and other material coatings can be applied to ferrules to serve as insulation or to add color for coordination and convenience.

Applications of Ferrules

Many industries take advantage of the different benefits and qualities of ferrules. The electronics industry makes extensive use of ferrules in wiring and shielding applications. Electricians, for example, utilize ferrules to make connections between different sets of wires. The wires are simply placed within the center of the ferrule, and it is, then, clamped down on the wires to make contact and hold them together. Ferrules also provide electronics, like circuit board components, with electromagnetic shielding. This protects sensitive data transferring components from interference. Fluid handling companies also utilize ferrules for making connections between systems and for moving fluids from one location to another. Ferrules are utilized on the end of gas and fuel lines to connect them to fuel reservoirs or engines. Many other industries use these devices to improve wear resistance and protect parts from being damaged. These devices have literally hundreds of uses and offer excellent advantages to many different industrial applications.
