Airless Paint Sprayer

An airless paint sprayer is a handheld piece of equipment that produces a fine mist of paint through use of a hydraulic pump. Other paint sprayers use air compressors to generate enough pressure to atomize the paint; as the name suggests, this particular type of sprayer does not. The paint mist from airless paint sprayers is used to speed the process of coating large surface areas for practical or aesthetic reasons.

Airless Paint Sprayer

An airless paint sprayer is a system consisting of the hydraulic pump, hose, spray gun, paint intake and appropriate fittings and gauges. Some are gas-powered while others are electric. The pump's pressure can range from 300 to 7,500 pounds per square inch (psi), depending on the viscosity of the paint and the design of the tip of the spray gun. Many components of airless paint sprayers are stainless steel because the alloy metal is easy to clean and does not corrode quickly. Strong, durable plastic is used for the spray gun with brass parts for the tips and fittings. Airless paint sprayers are used for many different consumer and industrial purposes such as applying stains, sealers, enamels, latex paint and other coatings to building interiors, commercial buildings, metal parts, plastic products and other applications. Heavy duty industrial, chemical and marine coatings and linings are applied using airless paint sprayers.

Airless paint sprayers use a hydraulic pump instead of an air compressor because the coating penetrates better into crevices, pits or cracks. The coating is even and uniform which helps it dry quickly. Fewer coats are needed and less solvent is released into the environment. The hydraulic pump uses a piston or diaphragm to create a partial vacuum that causes pressurization. Paint is drawn into the hose by the intake port and travels through the hose at high speeds. When the trigger is depressed, the paint speeds out through the opening and dispersed into the pattern of the tip. There are three main kinds of tips that can be interchanged: full cone, hollow cone and flat stream. A full cone produces a spray pattern of a solid circle while a hollow cone sprays just the outline of a circle. A flat stream produces a short dense solid line of paint. Other paint equipment is beneficial as well. Filters prevent debris from becoming clogged in the nozzle and safety glasses, a mask and good ventilation should be used for health reasons. Because of the high pressure, injury is possible if the stream of paint comes into contact with fingers, toes or skin. The pressure must be released safely, even when the sprayer is off.
