EMI Coating

In order to subdue Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) or Electromagnetic Interference (EMI), numerous varieties of conductive coatings are used within an electronic enclosure. Treatment of EMI coating occurs on the inside of electronic enclosures, on the rear of plastic front and back panels, and on other plastic surfaces which require shielding.

Individual EMI coatings vary in durability, reliability, inherent surface conductivity, capabilities, uniformity, dimensional tolerance control, and if the coating adheres to plastic parts. Various environmental concerns, such as whether an EMI coating is recyclable or the effect of environmental exposure on the coating’s integrity and electrical properties, are also important considerations.

The most common materials used as EMI coatings include heat-shrink tubing, gold, silver, nickel, graphite, and other metallic-impregnated paints. Materials such as copper and aluminum are popular for EMI coatings due to their conductive properties. Reflective EMI coatings, found often on light bulbs and other light fixtures, are used on plastic or glass.
