Label dispensers are used in conjunction with label printers and applicators to facilitate the easy removal of the tags, tickets and stickers from the protective backing on which they are printed. Dispensers only partially remove the backing, which is then fully removed by hand or another automated device.

There are many different kinds of label dispensers. Manual, semi-automated and fully automated label dispensing units are commonly employed with other label machines or labeling systems, though manual and semi-automatic models are also used unaccompanied. In any configuration these devices improve productivity while reducing label handling time. Faster turnaround lessens the exposure to dirt, dust, oil and other atmospheric elements that might otherwise impede product adhesion. Additionally, most dispensers rewind or recover expelled and disconnected backing tape. This enhances workplace safety as smooth, plastic-like liners may otherwise collect on the floor creating a slipping hazard for workers. Industrial, commercial and even domestic settings often employ label dispensers, which are particularly popular in shipping and handling, product branding and pricing, manufacturing, food and beverage, pharmaceutical and packaging applications. As these uses vary significantly, it is important to consider the level of use and corresponding degree of automation best suited to each situation. Additional considerations include label and dispenser size, single or multiple row provisions as well as the material construct of both the label and the backing.
The systematic dispensing of labels is quite basic, though advanced features are often incorporated into automated systems. Label dispensers employ a series of rollers or spools around which the pre-printed labels are wound. As the label reaches the point of ejection, the backing continues to move around a tight radius. The thinner and more ductile liner easily follows this pattern, but the thicker and more rigid liner does not bend and is instead lifted away from the backing where it then protrudes through the front or top of the dispensing device, ready for removal and application. The success of operation necessitates that the liner be kept taught or at a consistent tension. Too much tension, however, can cause a tear or break in the tape in which case the process would be disrupted and the tape would need to be rethreaded. In manual operations the removal of one label pulls the liner forward and readies another label. Semi or fully automated systems, however, utilize strip plates, photo detection or limit switches in the progression of the tape. Detectors and switches sense the absence or presence of labels based on broken light beams or weight respectively. Though either may be used, photo detection is not compatible with the use of transparent labels as this does not break the light and trigger the sensor.
