Fiberglass grating makes for an advantageous option as an alternative to
grating made of metal. Fiberglass grating is reliable for a long lifetime under
extreme conditions. Fiberglass grating is made of two main elements: resin
and glass. The resin-to-glass ratio of fiberglass grating is very important.
It determines how strong and corrosion resistant the grating will be. The resin
gives the corrosion resistance, and the glass gives the strength.
Fiberglass grates can be made of a molded construction or a pultruded formation.
Molded fiberglass has a higher resin content (about 65%), making it more corrosion
resistant than pultruded fiberglass. Molded fiberglass grating is made of continuous
interwoven glass strands. Pultruded fiberglass gratings are made up of bearing
bars and bearing bar and cross bar spacers, using about 30% resin and 70% continuous
fiberglass strand. Pultruded fiberglass grates offer the most superior loading
strength.
All fiberglass gratings are 1/3 the weight of and more corrosion resistant
than steel or aluminum. Fiberglass grates are high impact resistant, fire retardant
and low maintenance, offering longevity with no rusting or needing to be painted.
