Mobile Lifts Industry Information

Mobile Lifts

A mobile lift is used on construction sites to raise and lower workers or building materials. This can be useful when working at high levels on the interior or exterior of a building. The lift has four wheels and a motor that allows it to be steered and driven by the operator to be moved and positioned while working. Mobile lifts are manufactured in a variety of styles with varying weight capacities and height capabilities, but the idea is to provide access to rooftops and mezzanines safely and efficiently. Rather than taking time to construct scaffolding on the side of a building, workers can stand on the mobile lift platform and access different areas of the building simply by moving the lift up and down or from side to side.

How Mobile Lifts Work

A mobile scissor lift has a rectangular platform that workers stand on with metal railings around it. A set of controls mounted to the platform drives the lift around and raises or lowers the platform. The platform should always be at the lowest possible setting when the wheels are in motion to create more stability. Hydraulic power lifts the platform by unfolding a series of interlinking arms. These lifts can raise a person just a few feet, or they can be built to extend to heights of 30 and 40 feet. Another type of mobile lift has a heavier base with a driver’s seat and an enclosed set of operating controls. The driver controls the lift while a person stands on a platform that is connected to the lift by a long arm, similar to a crane. The arm extends and retracts to varying heights using a hydraulic cylinder. This type of lift can be driven over rougher terrain and usually extends much further, making it well suited to commercial construction projects.

Applications of Mobile Lifts

Mobile lifts are also used in film sets and live concerts in the entertainment industry. Because the lift can be raised up, it provides cameramen and spotlight operators with a good angle. When the concert or film shooting is over, the lift can quickly be lowered and moved to another location.
