Electrical discharge machining, or EDM, is an incredibly useful process for machining hard metals or other materials that cannot be machined cleanly. Wire EDM utilizes a wire attached to a power source to generate electrical discharges, or sparks, which barrage the surface of the material and remove small bits of the material. All the while, a dielectric fluid, commonly water, is flowing over the material and the electrode to cool and wash away the removed bits before they can reattach. This process minimizes the amount of material removed while still cutting all the way through the workpiece, so very small and intricate cuts and features can be made.
