Gantry cranes, a form of overhead cranes, are similar to a bridge crane except that they are floor-supported on one or both ends. Single-leg gantry cranes are floor-supported at one end only, while double-leg gantry cranes are floor-supported at both ends. Mobile gantry cranes are able to move along runways on the floor.
Gantry cranes can be used outdoors, since they do not require wall or ceiling mounting. They also are used to span a smaller amount of work area compared to bridge cranes.
Gantry cranes are widely used for docks and shipbuilding. One specialized type of gantry crane is the portainer crane, also known as a container crane, ship-to-shore crane, or STS crane. In this type of gantry crane, the horizontal gantry rails and their supporting beam are cantilevered from between frame uprights spaced to fit the length of a freight container.
