Displacer Level Switches

A displacer level switch is a level sensor and control utility that monitors and measures the changes in buoyancy force placed on a displacer. This is accomplished through the suspension of at least one weight by a spring. Changes to the tension of the spring reflect changes in the level of the materials being measured.

Displacer Level Switches

Because displacer level switches come into physical contact with the materials they measure, they are a mechanical level switch variety. Displacer level switches are important tools in the measurement and control of a wide variety of materials in many contexts. Particularly in post-industrial process water treatment, displacer level switches are important level measurement tools. In addition to their applications in water treatment, they can be used for the measurement of sludge, slurry, oil and all kinds of other material levels. Displacer level switches are versatile and reliable, though in particularly demanding or hazardous environments, they can be susceptible to corrosion or other kinds of degradation. In such applications, no-contact sensors like ultrasonic or optical sensors and switches may be more appropriate.

Displacer level switchers harness gravity and electrical signals to measure levels. Displacer level switches involve one or more weights suspended from an electrically-powered force monitoring device. When the level of measured materials rises sufficiently and the material comes into contact with the switch's suspended weight, the tension in the spring used to suspend the switch decreases. That tension reduction is expressed as an electrical signal and is interpreted by the sensor. Depending on their construction and intended use, displacer level switches can monitor a wide range of material levels, both large and small. They may also be used in high-pressure applications. Displacer level switches may also be manufactured to meet FM, UL, NEMA, and ANSI/ISA guidelines. Displacer level switches can be used in a variety of industrial applications, including those where the measured material may be heavy oils, dirty liquids, liquids with solids and paints. The switches can also be used in more complex applications, such as monitoring the levels of multiple vessels and their pumps. It is important to carefully pair every level switch configuration with its intended application, as some varieties can be more suitable in a given context than others.
