Fiberglass boxes serve as storage containers in industrial applications, as flotation device and life vest storage in marinas and docks, fire extinguisher containers and commercial at-home containers for products like fishing tackle and pool equipment. Liquid products like paint and batteries, which may leak fluid, are often kept in fiberglass boxes because they do not leak. Electric outlet boxes and window flower boxes are also often made of fiberglass, and they can be sanded and painted in order to improve their appearance. One of the most popular uses for fiberglass boxes is as mounting surfaces for aftermarket audio equipment for use in vehicles. Such boxes are custom-shaped to fit in the trunk or other places in the vehicle and can be painted or otherwise decorated to match the rest of the vehicle. They keep speakers, subwoofers and CD changers secure and safe in a moving vehicle. Fiberglass boxes are also employed as lockers and storage enclosures.
Fiberglass offers a corrosion resistant, durable, fire resistant, long lasting and lightweight material for containers. It is often chosen over alternative materials like steel, plastic, aluminum and wood, which generally do not boast light weight and high strength properties simultaneously. Most fiberglass boxes have lids that are either attached to the box or that can be removed. Inside, many have compartments to hold smaller objects in place, and car audio equipment boxes are often lined with carpet-like material as padding. These boxes often are made of a composite of fiberglass threads and a thermoplastic resin, which is called fiberglass reinforced plastic, a very durable material that is manufactured by a molding process. Because they are molded, fiberglass boxes are able to have sleek contours and a smooth finish. These boxes are manufactured via the closed molding process to obtain their shape. The closed molding process involves combining fiberglass with gel in a mold, heating and forming it and then allowing it to cure.
