Wire Connectors

Wire connectors are used to connect one or more conductive wires to various electrical circuits. The most common material used to manufacture conductive metal wire is copper, due to its extremely high electrical conductivity. Another highly conductive metal is silver; however, the high cost of silver makes it a much less popular choice for industrial applications. Some common metal alloys used to manufacture conductive metal wire include nickel-titanium and niobium-titanium; however, neither of these alloys can meet the overwhelming popularity of copper wire.

Industry Information

Wire Connectors

Wire connectors are typically coated with a plastic material, which is color-coded in order to indicate the gauge of the wire that the connector is able to secure, gauge being a measurement of the diameter of the wire. For instance, a large blue wire connector can secure a #10 gauge wire and larger, whereas a small orange wire connector can secure a range of sizes from #22 to #14 gauge. Utilized in many applications, wire connectors are most commonly found in industries including: construction, for high or low level voltage electric systems in constructed buildings; industrial, used in the electrical systems of manufacturing warehouses and processing facilities; electronics, as essential components in the construction of many electrical systems and devices; and aerospace, for use in commercial and military aircraft to meet stringent electrical system safety standards.

Although wire connectors can be manufactured in many different configurations, the main wire connector configurations are a wire terminal and a twist-on wire connector. A wire terminal is also commonly referred to as a wire end connector and is a non-permanent type of wire connector. A wire terminal is defined as a type of passive conductor that is used to establish a connection that is not soldered, making it able to be either a temporary or portable wire connector. Although this type of wire connector is popular for many applications, twist-on wire connectors are probably even more commonly used, especially for use in electrical system applications. Twist-on wire connectors are known by many other names as well, including pressure-type wire connectors, wire nuts, thimble connectors and cone connectors. Used for the purpose of fastening together two or more electrical conductors, twist-on wire connectors are commonly manufactured from plastic materials and are available in a wide range of shapes and sizes. The construction of the wire connector features a tapered, conductive, metallic material (most often copper) used as a coiled insert and threaded on to the wires needing to be secured. Although this type of wire connector can be utilized with most wire material types, it is not recommended for use with aluminum wire.
