Industry Information

Strainers

Strainers are products made from woven wire cloth that are used for clog prevention, filtering, draining, straining and sifting of liquid materials. The chemical, coolant, food processing, beverage, laboratory, medical, pharmaceutical and refrigerant industries use strainers as part of their manufacturing process. They are also common at-home general-purpose items used in kitchens. They come in many different shapes, sizes, weave patterns, and are usually made from fine-gauge wire cloth. While most are designed to catch solids, some strainers remove certain kinds of liquid, gas and steam media. Bronze, cast iron, nickel alloy, steel and titanium are all used to manufacture wire cloth strainers.

There are 5 main types of strainers-basket and duplex, which are permanent, and in-line, tee type and Y-strainers, which need are regularly replaced. Those that require closing down a line to be cleaned or changed are called basket strainers. Duplex basket strainers, on the other hand, never need to shut down for cleaning. They are composed for multiple baskets and when one is full, the flow is switched to another. In-line strainers are for temporary use and often used in sanitary applications. Tee type strainers are also temporary, but they are designed for applications where quick removal is important. Finally, Y-strainers are more complicated, mechanical devices that may remove media from gasses as well as liquids.
