Tube Forming Machines/

Pipe Bender

Pipe benders are a type of machinery used in the forming of pipe into various shapes, specifically bends which are angles of 2º to 90º, under normal conditions. Although the machinery and the processes are incredibly similar, pipe bending primarily differs from tube bending because of the differences between piping and tubing.

Pipe Bender

Piping requires a different sort of bending process because it is different from tubing, which is defined by the different set of standards that each are manufactured to as well as they way in which they are specified: pipe by the internal diameter (ID) and a wall thickness, a nominal diameter and a wall thickness, and tube by the outside diameter (OD) and wall thickness. Able to be manually, hydraulically, pneumatically or electrically powered, during pipe bending the pipe may require internal or external support so that the cross section of the pipe is preserved and not flatten by the various components of the pipe bending machine. However, support is not always required depending on the flexibility of the pipe's shape. Due to a wide range of potential applications, pipe benders are advantageous for industries such as: industrial manufacturing, as various components in mechanical systems including conveyor rollers and compactors; petroleum, for use in oil refinery equipment and oil well casings; and food and beverage, to be used in processing plants for the delivery of bulk solids, gases and liquids.

There are many different methods of pipe bending, but there are three main press bender machine types: ram, roller and rotary. Ram pipe benders can also be referred to as press benders and function to bend the pipe by means of pressing a die against the pipe and forcing it to fit the shape of the die. This is a cold working process. Roller pipe benders on the other hand, or simply roll benders, function by means of a series of rollers that are used to apply pressure to the pipe and gradually force the pipe to attain a bend. Several different roller types can be used including spindle-shaped, pyramid-style and double pinch type. Lastly, there are rotary pipe benders, or rotary draw benders (RDB), which are the most popular type of pipe bender. Rotary pipe benders attain bends by way of die sets that consist of two main parts, which are the former die and the counter die. The former die creates the shape to which the pipe will be bent whereas the counter die actually does the physical work of pushing the pipe into the former die and thus shaping it. Some common pipe bending methods include heat induction pipe bending, sand-packing and hot-slab forming. Although many of these methods have been around for ages, they are still widely popular means of pipe bending.
