Adjustable Shelving
The degree of adjustment possible in a given adjustable shelving unit varies among different
shelving systems. Some units allow only changes in height and shelf division spacing while others can be completely reconfigured. In industries where inventory may change frequently, fully adjustable shelving may be essential. Automotive, garage, chemical and food processing, medical, textile, publishing and virtually every other modern industry requires
storage shelving to create and maintain efficient work areas and production schedules. As inventory can range from boxes, totes and papers to motor components and heavy equipment, it is crucial to select the right size shelving to avoid potentially costly and dangerous mechanical failure due to overloading. Like all
shelving units, it is important to consider the weight capacity, height, depth, width and diameter with regards for the intended use of a shelf. The weight capacity should always exceed the total weight of inventory to be stored. For most industrial settings
steel shelving is preferred due to durability and strength. Alternative materials include aluminum, wood, plastics, composites and glass.
Modular shelving is an extremely versatile product. While pre-assembled shelving units are sometimes adjustable, most adaptable units are assembled on location to ensure the best use of space. Once assembled, some shelves allow the height and position of the shelf surface to be changed without disassembling the unit. Others must be taken completely apart and then reassembled in the new configuration. The choice between the two is largely reliant upon the degree of change necessary as well as how frequently adjustments will be made. The method of adjustment is likewise variable. In fully transformable units, components are often clipped together or have interlocking components. When only one feature is adjustable, it is often along a sliding track with pegs, grooves or notches controlling stability. In any case, each new configuration should be carefully assembled and installed so as to meet federal, state and local building and fire codes in the work place. Adjustable shelving allows for optimization of storage space in ever evolving work environment. The ease of access and proper storage of inventory can increase process flow and workplace efficiency, creating significant space and time savings.
