Static O-Rings are designed to fit inside a groove between two parts. This groove is designed to be smaller than the full diameter of the O-Ring. Consequently, as the elastomeric O-Ring attempts to expand, the space fills and creates a seal.
Static O-Rings are effective as seals because they require no adjustment or high bolting forces or torque. They are also able to withstand a wide range of temperatures and pressures.
Several different types of seals, or fittings, are suggested for use with static O-Rings. The end-cap seal uses system pressure to close a clearance gap, while the plug seal has added wall support to minimize breathing and is often used to create a vacuum seal. The boss seal is used for straight tube fittings in a boss. Dovetail or undercut seals will not allow the seal to come loose, but they are difficult to machine and are therefore typically used only when absolutely necessary.
