Static Bags
The common variations of static bags include dissipative poly bags, black conductive poly bags, shielding bags and moisture barrier bags. With the use of a dissipative poly bag, the static charge is dissipated to the ground, preventing an increase of static electricity on the bag. This type of bag is most often used in the packaging industry. Because black poly is highly conductive, black conductive poly bags provide some shielding; these bags are also able to dissipate a charge very quickly. Shielding bags, on the other hand, have many of the dissipative features of poly bags, but they also offer a metal shield to keep static out of the bag. Shielding bags are often used for electronic components. When an anti-static application requires a barrier, moisture barrier bags are a popular choice, as they dissipate static electricity, provide static shielding, and add a barrier of moisture. The electronic, graphics, photography, printing and optics industries, among many others, benefit from static bags. In addition to standard models, static bags can be custom-made to meet the specific requirements of an application.
Static bags join a slew of other
ESD products that are geared toward protecting electronics from electrostatic discharge, which can cause immense amounts of damage very quickly. ESD is an instantaneous electric current that occurs when two products create friction through contact, known as tribocharging, or when a non-grounded conductive object is too close to an electrically charged object. Either way, the electrostatic discharge can sometimes be powerful enough to melt sensitive parts and ruin expensive machines. That is why
static eliminators, including static bags are so important in numerous industries. Many of the
ESD protection products also serve as cleaning supplies. For example,
anti static spray is a water based detergent that cleans and refreshes surfaces while also removing ESD from the product.
Static brushes also clean the surface of an object of dust and flux, while simultaneously neutralizing the object of ESD activity; additionally, static brushes can be used to paint and apply stains and such while doing the same ESD protective work. Static bags are just one of the many styles of ESD preventative products.
