SS tubes are hollow cylindrical objects, similar to pipes, used as the medium through which fluids and gases are transported as well as various other equipment components, such as hydraulic cylinders. An abbreviated name for stainless steel tubes, the material composition of this particular type of hardware is a common selection due to its many desirable characteristics.

Known for high tensile strength and durability, this steel alloy also offers the high degree of heat, wear and corrosion resistance necessary in many industrial environments. Stainless steel tubes, for example, are essential to the transfer of volatile fluids and gases as they will not rust, corrode or stain easily even under the harshest of conditions. The many benefits of SS tubes over other metal and plastic tubing allow the use of these devices in petrochemical, water treatment, pulp and paper, automotive, medical, dental, semiconductor, food processing and aerospace industries among others. Products range from fuel lines to medical implants. Although this alloyed tubing has a higher initial cost than many other options, the elemental structure of stainless steel significantly increases tube longevity, reducing long term expenses such as maintenance and replacements. Though SS tubes will eventually need repair or replacement, this material is easily melted down and recycled, further reducing costs and waste.
Stainless steel is composed primarily of iron with varying amounts of carbon and a wide variety of additional metallic components. Chromium is the essential ingredient in the creation of this particular alloy as it provides the extreme resistance to wear and corrosion as well as the self-repairing properties of stainless steel alloys. Composition of a given alloy varies, though to be classified as stainless, steel must be composed of at least 10% chromium. The varied alloys can be placed into one of four major types of stainless steel and used to determine the proper composition required for a given tubing application. Ferritic, martensitic, duplex and austenitic are common categorizations of stainless steel with the latter being the most popular choice for SS tubes. Three common techniques are used in the production of these hollow metal components. Welding involves roll forming stainless steel and connecting the formed portions along a seam through fusion. In comparison, seamless tubing involves extrusion of stainless steel tubing through piercing a round blank. Metal spinning is a "cold worked" metal fabrication technique in which a metal spinner uses a flat round disc of sheet metal that is rotated on a spinning lathe. The process and particular stainless steel alloy should be carefully considered with regards to the intended use of a tube. Further considerations include inner and outer diameters, wall thickness, pressure rating, maximum bend radius, temperature range and finishing.
