The three main types of stainless steel are austenitic stainless steel, ferritic stainless steel, and martenistic stainless steel. Austenitic stainless steel contains at least 16 percent chromium and enough nickel or manganese to sustain a face-centered cubic crystal structure at temperatures ranging from the cryogenic region up to the steel’s melting point. Over 70 percent of stainless steel produced is austenitic stainless steel.
Less ductile than austenitic stainless steel, ferritic stainless steels contain iron and chromium. Martenistic stainless steels, in comparison, contain low amounts of carbon and can be tempered and hardened, although hardening can cause the steel to become brittle.
