Acoustic Flooring

Acoustic floors and acoustical ceilings are especially important in multi-storey buildings in which sound can transfer between levels disrupting areas which are unrelated. Thus, absorbing some of this sound and preventing the noise pollution from traveling further is important. The insulation used in acoustic flooring, is placed underneath the wooden, carpet or laminate flooring, and is made of various materials such as cork, foam and rubber. Different types of insulation are used according to the type of flooring (wood, carpet, tile, etc). They cut down on the transmission of sound between floors and room-to-room, and as a general rule, the thicker the insulation, the better the sound absorption. Acoustic flooring insulation reduces both types of sounds, cutting back airborne noises that travel through the air, such as music and voices, and impact noise, such as a vibrating washing machine or footsteps, and flanking transmission, which is the noise that passes through the floors and walls.

There are a couple different options when it comes to choosing acoustic flooring that a customer can choose regarding flooring. It is best to consult a sound engineer for soundproofing purposes however, as they are able to correctly decide upon the most ideal and cost-effective solution for a space. Soundproofing does not have to be an expensive process, however, for the best quality material and results, a customer will be paying higher prices. Floating insulation mixes structural boards and overlay boards and is applied directly onto concrete or wood. Battens and cradles enable the construction of service voids, which reduce the impact of sound transmission and decouple the ceiling from the joints. When the ceiling below has exposed wooden joists, impact sound transmission is worse. It is combated by a method of flooring underneath the insulation which is composed of a honey comb-shaped flooring and loaded with loose acoustic filling. Underlayment material is used commonly with hardwood or laminate floors as it cushions the material and maintains the integrity of the floor layout. Each of these materials is designed to be fireproof and to resist humidity and the development of molds or bacteria. Acoustic flooring will greatly add to the ambience of a room by preventing or reducing unwanted sounds and noises in the space.
