Industry Information

Contract Sewing

Contract sewing operations offer a wide variety of services related to the production of textiles. By the broadest definition, a textile is collection of fibers that are combined in order to become useful. The nature of a textile's usefulness is what sets it apart in name from its constituent materials. Contract sewing operations weave, twist, knit or otherwise combine yarn, threads and other fibers in order to create a textile. Textiles are extremely important industrial, commercial and consumer products in markets all across the globe. In developed economies, textiles are produced on a very large scale in order to accommodate the immense demand for them. Furniture, bedding, clothing, industrial protective covers and a wide variety of other products involve textile components or are exclusively comprised of textiles. Companies that manufacture products of which textiles are only a part often make arrangements with contract sewing operations to produce textile components on their behalf.

Contract sewing services include design, engineering, prototyping, fabrication and packaging as well as other services. Many types of fabrics are used in contract sewing. Certain materials tend to be limited to use within certain contexts, while others are used more widely. Vinyl-coated nylon is a lightweight, durable material that is a good choice for bags, presentation cases and industrial curtains because of its toughness and weather resistance. It is usually restricted to use in industrial or commercial applications, though there are some exceptions. Neoprene and Hypalon are chemical and abrasion-resistant and are also mainly limited to use in industrial applications. Canvas, which includes twills, soft flannels and felts, is a breathable material that is used for bags and curtains, as well as for many industrial applications, such as tool storage. Unlike other textiles, canvas is used in all kinds of contexts. Other common contract sewing materials include suede, leather, felt, webbing, plastic, cotton and polyester. Contract sewing is used by a wide range of industries. Larger contract sewing operations tend to have a variety of materials in stock in anticipation of orders, while smaller-scale operations order materials once they are called for. No two contract sewing services are exactly alike. Larger operations are more capable of producing large volumes of similar products quickly at low prices, while smaller operations tend to be more capable producers of intricate custom-sewn products. Whatever the needs of a client, the right contract sewing operation is available to meet its needs.
