Round balers are the most common type of agricultural baler in use today. They are most commonly used to bale hay for use in feeding livestock, especially in larger-scale operations such as dairy farms with hundreds of cows. When properly made and stored, large round bales are weather-resistant and maintain a high quality of hay.
Round balers use fixed rollers, rubberized belts, or a combination of the two to roll hay into cylindrical bales. When the bale reaches its predetermined size, a twine thread is wrapped around it. The back of the baler is then opened, and the bale is released. Round bales range anywhere from 48 to 72 inches in diameter and can weigh between 500 and 3,000 pounds.
Round balers are easy to transport using bale spears or grapple forks. Flatbed transportation is more difficult, as round balers carry with them the risk of rolling. However, this problem can be solved by using a trailer with rounded guard-rails or saddle wagons, which contain closely-spaced saddles or posts to contain the individual bales.
