In industry, rotomolding, the process used to produce rotationally molded plastics, is often used for the creation of plastic tanks; the process can produce tanks of high, uniform quality. In commercial contexts, rotational molding is frequently used to produce waste collection bins for use by municipalities as well as in places of business and in institutions. In consumer products settings, rotational molding is used to produce plastic products ranging from garbage bins to ornamental plastic lawn flamingos. Rotomoulding can be used to produce small plastic products in large quantities as well as large plastic products in small quantities. Manufacturers, distributors, suppliers, service companies and all kinds of other industrial operations make extensive use of rotationally molded plastics for use in storage, distribution, product containment and many other applications. Schools make use of rotationally slides and other playground equipment. Recreational watercraft like kayaks can also be created by rotational molding.
Rotational molding is quite similar to other plastic formation processes in terms of its principles of operation. Plastic extrusion, injection molding and vacuum forming all involve the heating of plastic beyond its melting point in order to form it into a useful product. However, rotational molding accomplishes this task in a way that is rather unlike other methods. The rotation molding process begins with a collection of raw plastic material placed in half of a hollow mold. Once placed in side, the other half of the mold is joined with the filled half and sealed. The mold is then heated, causing the plastic inside to become molten. Once this happens, the mold is rotated around one or more axes, which causes the molten plastic to coat the interior of the mold. Once completely coated, the mold's rotation ceases and it is cooled by water jets or other cooling processes. The cooled plastic is then ejected from the mold as a newly rotationally molded plastic product. From that point the plastic product can continue to additional processing like cutting or surface treatment, or it can be prepared for shipment to customers. Rotation molding can be used to form a wide variety of plastics; the list includes polyethylene of high and low densities, PVC, PET, nylon, polycarbonate, acrylics and many more thermoplastic materials.
