Aluminum Angle

Aluminum angles are aluminum parts that have been bent or conjoined to form an angle; they are among the most widely used metal parts in existence. The measure of an aluminum angle can be anywhere between 0 and 180 degrees in theory, though in practice the majority of aluminum angles measure near 90 degrees. Aluminum angles can be used as brackets in construction, to support shelving and have even been used to support flags when their edges are rounded.

Aluminum Angle

Uses of aluminum angles include edging on heavy duty storage containers, they can support recreational watercraft on trailers and they can be found as integral components on all manner of equipment and machinery; table saws, desks, workbenches, doorways, carts and bleachers can all make use of aluminum angles. While the applications of aluminum angles may vary widely, their construction always features the same core properties. Two legs, strips, sticks, segments or pieces of aluminum meet each other at a vertex. There are many ways in which the two pieces of aluminum can be joined together. They can be welded, they can be screwed or they can be connected with other kinds of fasteners. Aluminum angles can also be made from a single piece of aluminum that has been bent during an industrial process. One of these processes is roll-forming.

Roll-forming is the process by which a strip of some material is formed. The roll-forming process takes place in a roll-former, which is a long, narrow machine that features a long series of rollers spaced slightly apart from each other and a cutting mechanism to separate finished products from each other. A roll-former works by receiving a metal strip through its intake and passing it through its rollers. The first rollers in the series fit tightly around the contours of the strip. The second rollers vary slightly in their placement, changing the shape of the strip slightly. Each subsequent roller in the series varies slightly in its placement, making small changes to the metal strip's shape until the end of the series, at which point the strip has taken its shape. In the case of aluminum angles, for example, a roll-former may begin with four rollers, two above and two below the metal strip. By the end of the roller series, two of the rollers above and below one side of the strip would remain near stationary, while the other two would force the other half of the strip to bend upward, forming the angle.
