12v Power Supply

Mostly used to power larger computer components like disk drive and fans, 12v power supplies convert AC (alternating current) from a wall outlet to DC (direct current) for the computer. They are small black boxes and are located behind the computer case or small black adapter cords. Since more computer components, recently including processors, are powered by the 12v rail, many power supplies come with multiple 12v rails in order to power more components at once. These power supplies are universal and are able to work anywhere in the world, mostly for computer and networking, telecommunications and fiber optic networks, voice, data and analog communications, in universities and schools, for instruments and electronics, in the utility and power industries, for data acquisition and in the medical and military industries as well.

There are two different types of 12v power supplies that deliver DC, which vary depending on the type of electronics and how high of temperature they reach when in use. Internal power supplies are for electronics that do not work at high temperatures and have a low risk of overheating. Power supplies that are manufactured outside of the device is there for better air flow or to reduce the risk of heat damage. Most are general-use adapters that convert AC to DC power supply applications. They differ in wattage, efficiency, working and storage temperature range, dimensions, weight, overload protection, cooling method (usually a small fan), and harmonics. They can be configured as a single or fully redundant power supply. 12v power supplies are inexpensive, universal and beneficial to the environment as well. They save power and are expected to replace every other type of power supply in the future.
