Positive displacement pumps move liquids and gases through displacement. Positive displacement pumps transfer substances from an area of high pressure to an area of low pressure. This change in pressure can be created by a piston that moves in and out of a cylindrical chamber or by gears that rotate the liquid around in gear teeth. Some common positive displacement pumps include bike pumps, oil pumps, and well water pumps.
When the piston leaves the chamber of a positive displacement pump, it becomes a vacuum that sucks the gas or liquid in from the inlet line. When the piston reenters the chamber, it pressurizes and displaces the liquid or gas. The inlet and outlet lines are fitted with valves so that the fluid can flow in only one direction. Internal gear pumps provide a more continual supply of liquid or gas.
There are several different kinds of positive displacement pumps, including metering, rotary, and reciprocating pumps. Positive displacement pumps are available in a variety of pressure and temperature ratings and should be chosen in consideration of the material being pumped and the application for which the pump will be used.
