Platform trucks are wheeled platforms, sometimes equipped with a motor, which
are designed to transport heavy loads and multiple items. Often used in warehouses
and freight yards, platform trucks have wheels or casters that allow easy transport
of loads ranging from 50 to 3000 pounds. Platform trucks can be operated by
a single worker, allowing that person to transport a heavy load independently.
Platform trucks come in several configurations and may have handles at one
or both ends, panels on one or more sides, or be completely enclosed. Platform
trucks may be constructed from a variety of materials including metals and
wood, they may also have several wheel/caster options. Pneumatic wheels allow
the platform truck to maneuver through rough terrain, and other wheel types
may raise or lower the platform several inches. Some platform trucks are also
designed to maneuver through tight spaces and around sharp turns with swivel
casters.
Platform trucks are used in many commercial and industrial applications where
moving large or heavy items quickly is important. Platform trucks offer safety
and are less expensive to own and maintain than forklifts and other mechanical
devices.
