Stainless Steel Spinning

Stainless steel spinning is a process in which steel disks are mounted on lathe mandrels, rotated at high speeds and shaped by shaping tools called spoons that apply pressure to the metal’s surface as it spins. Metal spinning is an attractive process to professionals who require access to axially symmetric shaped metal parts with high strength and durability.

Stainless Steel Spinning

Metal spinners are capable of producing corrosion-resistant steel products for use in many industrial, commercial and consumer products applications. A few examples of spun steel metal parts include bowls, tank heads, finials, architectural lighting and many other products. Metal spinning can produce corrosion-resistant steel products because it is a cold working process. Cold working processes shape metals at or near room temperature. Other steel shaping processes involve the application of heat to improve the metal's formability; such processes are called hot working processes. While hot working can more easily produce shaped metal products, the application of sufficient heat to a metal can make it susceptible to corrosion and other undesirable composition changes. Steel spinning involves no more heat than the friction caused by the contact between the metal and the shaping tools.

Stainless steel spinning can create many versatile products because of the type of material being used. Stainless steel spun parts have high strength, performance and hardness, and their chromium content creates an unseen layer of protection against scratches and oxidization of the steel. Spun stainless steel retains its sheen for many exposed industrial and external applications. Stainless steel parts can be custom made or ordered in stock quantities from metal spinners. Manual metal spinning allows for complete customization and control of over the spinning process, and seasoned metal spinner technicians can produce very high quality spun metal parts. However, with the advent of computer numerical controlled systems, automated production of spun steel parts has accelerated. CMC metal spinning can produce extremely high quality parts with great accuracy and high repeatability. As this kind of efficiency has increased within the metal spinning industry, its economy has also increased, making spun metal products available to a wider range of industrial, commercial and even private customers. Decorative spun metal products like candle holders and bowls can easily be created in fairly large quantities by CNC metal spinners.
