Metalworking

Metalworking is the process of bending, cutting, joining, assembling and stamping metal parts to create usable metal products. Almost all industries that make use of metal products require the services of metalworking companies. Healthcare providers, aviation manufacturing, petrochemical exploration and refinement, construction and a host of other industries would not function without metalworking services to prepare usable metal products for them.

Metalworking

Metalworking processes are distinct from metal forming processes like forging, extrusion and casting in that metalworking processes are applied to metals that have already been formed; metalworking can be described as secondary to metal shaping processes. A metal rod would never be bent or stamped and then extruded, as the extrusion process would erase the changes imparted by the metalworking processes. Instead, extruded, forged and cast products are subject to metalworking processes after their primary formation. Metalworking is often a necessary part of metal product fabrication. For example, extruded metal beams for use in structural support applications often must be stamped or punched to allow for the attachment of fasteners once in use. The same is true for metal channels designed for use as street sign supports. Metal joints and other hardware products must often be bent or welded; bending and welding are both metalworking processes.

Metal fabricators offer a wide variety of metalworking services. A rich understanding of metallurgical principals, chemistry and other concepts related to the properties of different metals is a requirement of successful metalworking technicians. Metal bending services must be able to determine the composition of alloys, the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of alloys in order to determine to what extent they can be bent without becoming damaged. Welders require equally intimate knowledge of these properties, as the metal joints that they create can be used in bridge building applications as load-bearing elements and other important structural components. There are two main varieties of metal fabrication: heavy and light. Heavy fabrication involves the production of airframes, structural components and similar large metal products. Light fabrication processes are used to create components for furniture, ventilation systems and other smaller metal products. Regardless of the category, metalworking technicians cannot be successful without deep knowledge of the materials with which they work and their applications once fabricated.
