Industry Information

Retrofitting

Retrofitting is utilized when the old product design is no longer in production and only the new part is, so if the part breaks on the old product design, the only available option to replace the part is the new part. Retrofitting services are often utilized in a wide range of industries including: construction, in which retrofitting is used to improve characteristics such as strength and energy efficiency in constructed buildings; automotive, for use in the customizing or updating of older vehicles such as with the addition of technologies like power windows, remote keyless systems and cruise control; and, particularly, industrial manufacturing, in which retrofitting is used in order to update various processing, material handling and automation equipment such as conveyor systems and stamping presses.

As one of the three main types of services that machinery rebuilders provide, the other two being remanufacturing and repair services, retrofitting stands out due to its unique purpose. While remanufacturing services are used in order to rebuild the part and bring it back up to the standards that the part was original manufactured for. Repair services, on the other hand, only changes the part that is broken or damaged within the equipment, rather than completely rebuilding the entire piece. Retrofitting, however, does not require a part to be broken, nor does it require a complete rebuilding of the entire piece of equipment. Instead, retrofitting is a targeted service that can be either required or simply desired by the consumer. In addition to retrofitting performed in order to increase the service life of equipment by means of replacing worn parts or outdated technology and replacing old, no-longer-manufactured parts, with the newer version of the part, retrofitting services can also be used in order to alter the condition of the equipment or part and thus alter the intended application of the equipment or part. An example of this retrofitting purpose would be in electronics, for a computer that was previously used solely for applications such as Microsoft Word and Notepad, but has a new hard drive and now can be used to play high-definition graphics games.
