A pump is defined as a type of machine or device that can be used for the raising, compressing, or transferring of liquids or gases. Thus, when a component in the pump is worn or damaged in any way, leaks and contamination of the liquids or gases are inevitable. Both of these issues are very serious problems for pumps, which are vital devices used in a wide range of critical applications in industries such as: medical, in which pumps such as infusion pumps, syringe pumps, ambulatory pumps and enteral pumps are used in devices such as defibrillators, ventilators, IV equipment and more; industrial, where pumps such as vacuum pumps, diaphragm pumps, chemical pumps, metering pumps and more are used for various processing and manufacturing applications; agriculture, which uses pumps for irrigation purposes as well as for fertilization; and automotive, in which pumps such as centrifugal and vacuum pumps are used for fuel injection purposes in addition to other fluid transfer applications.
Since there are so many different pumps, pump repair services can vary broadly in terms of the components requiring fixing. While all pumps maintain the same general function, there is a broad spectrum of designs through which pumps can achieve this function. For instance, one main breakdown in pump design types is either a vertically suspended (VS) pump or a horizontal pump. A VS pump is designed in a manner in which the pumping element, which could be an impeller, diffuser or a column pipe and pump shaft, is submerged within the pumpage itself. A horizontal pump, on the other hand, is designed in a manner in which the pump can be horizontally mounted and thus operate on a horizontal plane. In addition, many pump repair service companies also often offer rebuilding and retrofitting services. Compared to repair services, pump rebuilding services are instead defined as the disassembly and recovery of a pump first at the module level and then eventually at the component level. Pump rebuilding services should be a complete reconstruction of the pump until it is restored to its original state. Pump retrofitting services are distinct from both repair and rebuilding services in that they involve are the providing of pumps with parts, devices, or technology that was not available or in common use during the time that the pump was originally manufactured. While pump retrofitting is not exactly a method of fixing pumps, it does alter them by means of updating their outdated technology.
