Engine rebuilders are service providers that offer the rebuilding of various engine types in order to either upgrade the technology of the engine or to return the engine to as close to its original state as possible. In fact, sometimes the newly rebuilt engine can be mechanically superior to the original engine due to the use of more advanced technologies.

Often the rebuilding of an engine is much more cost-effective than the alternate options of the repair of the damaged or worn engine as well as the purchase of a new replacement engine. Typically, when an engine rebuilder receives a worn or damaged engine to rebuild, they will use the old engine as the core that is then rebuilt into the new engine. Although the automotive industry is likely the most common industry in need of engine rebuilders, various other industries utilize their services as well including: industrial manufacturing, in order to rebuild engines used in automation, assembly and processing machinery; construction, to rebuild the engines of traveling construction equipment such as overhead cranes; agricultural, for the rebuilding of engines in farming equipment such as balers, tractors and combines; sports and recreation, to rebuild engines in off-road vehicles such as motorcycles, dirt bikes, snowmobiles and more; and marine, in order to rebuild engines in shipping vessels including naval ships.
Engine rebuilders are able to provide rebuilding services for engines requiring various levels of work, as well as in diverse levels of assembly and with varied performance levels. Since the old engine is most typically used as the core of the new engine, engine rebuilders most commonly offer the service of rebuilding without the loss of the original identity. This means that the rebuilding process does not cause the engine to be indistinguishable from what was produced by the original manufacturers, but instead maintains its general characteristics and basic form. Put simply, the engine is still identifiable as the engine it once was. Although it is a rare occasion for engine rebuilders, rebuilding can occur in which the product loses its original identity and is no longer distinguishable as the product that was produced by the original manufacturers. In this case, the old engine would not be used as the core for the new engine. Even though engine rebuilders are able to provide a multitude of service, at times they will outsource the more highly sensitive machining processes out to machine shops that employ high trained and specialized machinists to ensure optimum results. Some examples of machining processes that may need to be outsourced include boring cylinder blocks and grinding crank shafts.
