Ball screw repair is a type of service that many machinery rebuilders provide, and specifically deals with the removal and replacement of broken or worn parts within ball screws. A ball screw is defined as device that is used to convert rotational motion into horizontal movement (also known as linear motion or torque) by means of a nut that runs up and down a screw by ways of ball bearings that allow travel in helical grooves.

Used to return worn or damaged ball screws to their original manufactured state, ball screw repair services are significantly less expensive than replacing a damaged ball screw by purchasing a new ball screw. Able to provide fast and efficient turn around on services, ball screw repair service companies are typically capable of three main services: repairing, refurbishing and remanufacturing/rebuilding. Ball screw repair services are essential for a wide range of applications and industries that commonly utilize ball screws including: aerospace, for use in fly by wire aircraft and missile control applications; medical, for use in medical equipment such as blood gas analyzers; industrial manufacturing, in which ball screws are essential for use in material handling equipment, conveyors and machine tools, robotic lines, precision assembly equipment and more; and semiconductor, for use in semiconductor production and inspection machinery and equipment.
Before a ball screw repair service company is able to repair the damage or wear done to the ball screw, they must first evaluate and diagnose the components that are worn or damaged. However, before the repair company is able to diagnose the specific ball screw problem, first the owner of the ball screw must recognize that there is an issue to begin with. Thus, here are some examples of common symptoms of ball screws needing repair work done: heat discoloration such as skid marks, loose or missing seals or wipers, a loss of positioning accuracy, visual contamination such as grease breakdown, excessive vibrating noise during operation as well as excessive backlash. In addition to there being many different symptoms or signs that a ball screw may demonstrate when requiring repair services, there are also three different levels of repair. In the first level of repair, the screw must be reground and the nut assembly of the ball screw must be replaced. This level requires the longest amount of time for repair and is the most extreme. In the second level of repair, the original screw and nut assembly must be reloaded with new balls, a process that takes an average of about three days. In the third level of repair, very simple and basic, but temporary, repairs are performed. In cases of emergency, these repairs can be performed in one to two days.
