where machine motion poses a hazard. Known as safety light curtains,
safety light beams, safety light barriers and light grids, optical guarding is made up of photoelectric
presence sensors or AOPDs (Active Opto-electronic Protective Devices).
Light curtains are great in situations where workers often need to assess a
point-of-operation hazard, applications such as robotic welding, machining
centers, stamping, hydraulic presses, filter presses and packaging equipment.
Safety light beams offer the finest degree of protection and are simple and

Light curtains provide point-of-operation
protection, perimeter
guarding or area
access control. They can come large and strong enough to guard broad perimeters,
or the light beams can be compact for tight machine spaces. The two essential
parts of safety light curtains are emitters and receivers, which combine to
form infrared light screens, or fences. Anything that crosses these barriers
blocks the light and, thus, triggers the machine to stop.
