Print and Apply Labelers

Print and apply labelers are multifaceted labeling machines designed to both produce and situate labels on products and materials as needed in a variety of industrial, commercial and domestic applications. While most of these devices are automated, print and apply labeling also refers to those systems in which labels are manually removed from the printer and applied to substrates via pressure sensitive or adhesive material backings.

Print and Apply Labelers

Print and apply labelers are preferred in applications that require the production of variable or individual labels as pre-printing and storing every type would be impractical. Continuous run or high production applications such as serial numbering or barcode labeling, however, benefit from semi or fully automated systems that require little or no operator interference. The use of computer or microprocessor control systems that allow several label designs, patterns and formatting to be stored in one system have more recently become integral features for both manual and automated labeling alike. The use of computers as integrated labeler components has significantly increased the demand for and use of automated print and apply systems as components are easily synchronized for heightened accuracy in both production and application. Depending on the degree of automation desired, AGV equipment may be used to manipulate the products of labeling devices as needed for optimal and accurate operation. Applications such as shipping and handling, product branding and pricing, manufacturing, food and beverage, pharmaceutical and packaging make daily use of print and apply labelers as do many other industries such as automotive, aerospace and agriculture.

The design of print and apply labelers can be quite simple or very complex depending on the requirements of a system. While many different kinds of printers may be used, direct thermal or thermal transfers are preferred in many applications. These use heat sensitive inks which are either burned directly into the label stock or transmitted via coated resin or wax ribbons. The printer receives the formatting and other instructions from a computerized system to allow for easy user interface. Although not specifically mentioned in the product title as with the printer and the applicator, label dispensers are often an integral element of these automated systems as they prepare the newly printed tags for application. Label applicators use several different mechanisms such as tamping, tamp and blow, air blow and wiping to attach pressure sensitive or adhesive labels to products. Shrink wrap sleeves are also used in some applications such as bottle labelers. As printing may occur at rates different than that of production, applicators often have manual or automated triggering mechanisms that advance the liner to the next finished label.
