Portable ovens are small, movable appliances that have the same function as standard industrial ovens, but to a smaller degree. The can be powered by electricity, convection or gas and are used for at home baking, browning, toasting and heating, as well as laboratory functions and applications. They are generally lighter in weight and can easily move to different locations. Handles and wheels are commonly seen on the exterior of portable ovens for easier maneuvering. Most portable ovens, when empty, can be carried easily and are designed to do so. They are for much smaller volumes than standard ovens, both industrial and at-home, but have a shorter pre heating time. Portable ovens can often be stacked on top of one another or mounted to a counter or the wall if necessary. Most are free standing. These ovens are often able to reach around 1000º F.

Portable ovens are used in both commercial and industrial applications. They generate heat a number of different ways, including convection, gas and electric. Portable convection ovens, commonly called toaster ovens, are mostly used in the home for cooking applications. Newer models use fan-based technology that allows for even heat distribution and a shorter cook time. Most gas and electric portable ovens are also used in commercial at-home applications and bake, heat or toast food. They also have several industrial uses. In a laboratory setting, many portable ovens are used to cure, preheat, dry and age non-edible materials as a means of testing their properties like strength and temperature resistance. They are also used to store electrodes in order to keep them dry and in good condition, as well as welding applications. Most portable ovens are made of stainless steel, because of its high strength to weigh ratio. It still provides excellent insulation and durability while remaining light enough to carry or transport with out much difficulty.
