Hydraulic pumps, sometimes erroneously referred to as “hydralic pumps,” are machines that pump hydraulic fluids into hydraulic fluid circuits. Hydraulic fluid is used in all kinds of machinery, and hydraulic pumps provide that machinery with the fluid necessary for functioning.

Hydraulic pumps can be used for many purposes, and they are available in a variety of different configurations. They can be used to direct hydraulic fluid into hydraulic machinery, they can be used to pump liquids to places where they are needed and they can be used for other purposes as well. Hydraulic pumps can be important parts of industrial process equipment, many varieties of which require the use of hydraulic cylinders as movement actuation mechanisms. In such cases, hydraulic pumps are used to transport hydraulic fluids to and from storage reservoirs. They move fluid from its reservoir into hydraulic cylinders, where the fluid is subject to compression and expansion in connection with the movement of attached parts. When the fluid is no longer needed as an actuation medium, it can be returned by the pump or by the relief of pressure to its storage reservoir.
When hydraulic pumps are not used for the transmission of hydraulic machinery actuation media, they can be used for the pumping of fluid between other kinds of places as well. Also, hydraulic pumps can be designed in ways that require varying levels of power input in order to make their operation possible. In some cases, hydraulic pumps can operate independent of generators or motors; such pumps are able to harness the kinetic energy of the fluids they pump as a result. In such pumps, a system of valves, reservoirs and a pressure vessel help to transport a naturally-flowing source of fluid into an artificially pressurized flow; hydraulic ram pumps are an example of such pumps. These kinds of pumps have been in use since the 18th century, and they continue to be used to varying extents today, in and outside of industry. They can be an attractive alternative to gas or electric pumps; their fuel-free operation makes them a sustainable choice compared to other devices. In cases when an independent power source is required, hydraulic pumps can be powered by engines, motors, power take-offs and a variety of other sources.
