12v hydraulic pumps are hydraulic power units that run off of 12 volts of direct current provided by a battery or motor. Like all hydraulic pumps, these are specially designed mechanisms used in industrial, commercial and consumer contexts to convert kinetic energy into useful mechanical energy via the pressurization of viscous fluids. This converted energy is used in a number of industries.

The construction, automotive manufacturing, defense contracting, transportation, marine, excavation and manufacturing industries all utilize these often heavy-duty pumps in machines and motorized vehicles to lift, pull and push heavy loads. Hydraulic water pumps can also be run off of 12 volt batteries and are used in the transportation of water either into or out of a desired location. These electric hydraulic pumps are popular as the batteries used to run them can be quite small, allowing for easy portability. Such portability is often needed in vehicles and waste removal systems. Options in addition to compact and portable models include rechargeable battery pumps, variable amp hour productions and variable weights. Though non-rechargeable alkaline 12 volt hydraulic pumps are available, rechargeable options are much more popular because they ensure a continuous flow. Additional considerations include maximum discharge flow, minimum discharge pressure, inlet size and discharge size. As 12 volt batteries are capable of pumping up to 150 feet from ground level, it is important to select the right pump for a given application.
No matter the initial power source, be it 12 volt battery or foot pedal, all hydraulic pumps operate in a similar manner. A reservoir is needed to house the fluids, which are often oil or water-based composites. Tubes or hoses attached to the reservoir carry the fluids to the hydraulic cylinder, which are cylinders that have both an intake check valve and a discharge check valve located at opposite ends. When a piston or gears are drawn back, they create a vacuum that pulls hydraulic fluid from the reservoir into the enclosed cylinder. The intake valve then closes, and the piston is returned to its original position, causing the liquids, often oil or water composites, to be compressed. This pumping action continues until pressurization is great enough to force fluids through the discharge valve. 12 volt hydraulic pumps use electric motors to generate and control the motion of the piston or gears. In some pumps the battery is in continuous use, while others use the momentum of transferred water after the initial battery powered movement. CNC machining and other precision manufacturing processes are used to produce the carefully calibrated pump parts in order to diminish leaks, which will decrease the functionality and productivity of a 12 volt hydraulic pump.
