Replacement cylinders prolong the lifespan of the systems in which they are installed. In order to maintain the optimum performance rates of such systems, the correct levels of pressure must be maintained within the hydraulic cylinders used in the system. Seals are an integral part of this and yet are easily worn down over years of continued use and are responsible for lower performance. Piston rods can also slow down the hydraulic operations and need to be periodically replaced or repaired. However, rather than simply repairing a worn-out cylinder, replacing it with a redesigned or re-engineered cylinder ensures upgraded operating performance and power output, and while it may be considered an expensive investment, the payoffs will be worthwhile in reduced downtime and improved output rates. Furthermore, some refer to manufacturing replacement cylinders as reverse engineering as replacement cylinders can also be used to update an older cylinder system with the latest technology. The process is a unique opportunity to design a better or heavy duty cylinder cycle, as well as to address any special design or option requests on the part of the equipment user.

Cylinders are typically designed and rebuilt by OEMs according to the specifications of the piece of equipment being replaced and its intended application. A replacement cylinder needs to be able to interchange precisely with the existing cylinder and there should be minimal adjustments to the rest of the machinery. Manufacturers of replacement cylinders will often discard of your used cylinder as well. In many cases, they will used worn out or older cylinders for parts or rebuilding, especially for applications with lower power loads. When replacing a cylinder, or cylinder component, it is important to determine what the cause of the initial wear and deterioration is. If the damage or wear and tear was limited to a spot rather than being overall deterioration, it is possible that there is a slight malfunction in the system that will not be fixed with a cylinder replacement such as fluid contamination or an incorrectly fitting cylinder and ram or piston. The correct operation of a system, as well as dedicated maintenance of its components could be responsible for saving valuable time and money for replacements in the future by making the existing system last for as long as it can.
