Extension Reels

Extension reels are a type of cylindrical device that mechanically or manually wind electrical cords to keep them organized, untangled and easy to use. Most of these reels automatically rewind and require a tug at the socket to unwind. Their prevention of loose electrical cord slack is helpful because slack gets in the way, takes up space, creates a tripping hazard, and is dangerous in environments with pets and small children. These reels keep the cord from catching on other objects or tangling, making the user’s task much easier.

Industry Information

Extension Reels

Extension reels are handy contraptions used to organize while in use and in storage for both commercial and industrial applications, including around the house, in offices, the garage, the garden, workshops, factories and industrial manufacturing facilities. Extension reels are often used outdoors to power garden tools and power tools, and are therefore made corrosion resistant and waterproof. They are useful in offices and facilities that use many different computer and electronic devices, as they keep all the cords organized. Extension reels are either mounted on the wall near an outlet or designed for easy portability with a carrying handle or as part of a small cart with wheels.

Most extension reels are automatically rewound mechanically by electric, spring or air power, allowing unwinding to occur with minimal effort. Extension reels are often retractable, which means that they automatically wind without any external help, usually by means of a spring inside the casing. Since this type of reel mainly winds electrical cords, which are typically thinner than hoses, cords of much longer length may be stored on these reels. The cylindrical reel casing is mostly made of resistant plastic material or metal, depending on their specific needs of their desired application. For waterproofing and cord protection, many extension reels are equipped with thermoplastic cord insulation that has an opening for the socket and a non-twist socket system. For those that are not portable, most reel casings are made with brackets for wall mounting. Regardless of where they are used, all extension reels must be used carefully, since a rolled up cable has a much higher resistance and can overheat easily, possibly causing a fire hazard. They are generally smaller in size because cord diameters are much smaller than hoses.
