Foam
Foam is a polymer-based material that contains trapped air bubbles inside. To create foam, molten polymer material is frothed and then cooled, filling the material with numerous tiny bubbles. Foam resembles a sponge because of these small air bubbles.
There are two general classifications of foam: open-cell structured foam and closed-cell structured foam. The distinction is simple; the air pockets, or cells, are interconnected in open-cell form and not connected in closed-cell form.
Foam can be made from various synthetic polymers. Polyurethane and polyethylene, two of the most common polymers used, each provides different desirable characteristics. For example, polyurethane foam is a closed-cell type of foam that decomposes when exposed to sunlight, making it an environmentally friendly choice. Polyethylene, on the other hand, provides excellent shock absorption. This type of closed-cell foam is therefore desirable for protective packaging applications.
Foam is found in cushioning, acoustics, packaging, and filtration applications. It is commonly utilized in the food service, recreation, transportation, insulation, medical, and construction industries.
