Fiberglass Sheets
Sheets of GRP, which is also known as fiberglass reinforced plastic, or simply fiberglass, is a composite of polymer resins and glass fibers. Polymer resins are the primary constituent materials in most plastics. Un-reinforced polyester resin, a very common polymer resin used for the construction of plastic products, has a tensile strength of about 55 MPa. Polyester, when reinforced with chopped strand mat laminate (a kind of fiberglass), is nearly twice as strong as un-reinforced polyester. Some polyester-fiberglass composites can feature tensile strength ratings of up to 800 MPa. Because of the tremendous strength that fiberglass reinforcement imparts upon polymer resins, they are very popular in all kinds of contexts. Fiberglass sheets in particular are popular light construction materials; they are widely used as greenhouse coverings, skylight paneling, flooring and in many other applications.
Because of their composition, fiberglass sheets are very versatile. Fiberglass sheets are resistant to extreme weather conditions, corrosion, acid, bleach and organic solvents. They also exhibit low friction, high dimensional stability and good mechanical strength. Fiberglass sheets are extremely durable and are renowned for their value, reliability, and strength. One of the most attractive qualities of fiberglass as a building material is its strength-to-weight ratio. Fiberglass is very light weight, which makes it easy to transport and install. However, despite its lightness, fiberglass is very strong, especially compared to un-reinforced plastic and glass. There are many processes by which fiberglass products are created. Fiberglass molding is the process of combining fiberglass with thermoplastic resins and gels. The open and closed fiberglass molding processes are responsible for creating many of the most widely used fiberglass products. That process involves heating a thermoplastic resin beyond its melting point, placing it in a mold or around a mandrel, spraying it or otherwise coating it with fiberglass and then curing it. The process is relatively inexpensive, which is one of the reasons for the low cost of most fiberglass products. Fiberglass sheets in particular, which are quite simple in their design, can be manufactured in large quantities at low cost.
