Screws

Screws are externally-threaded fasteners consisting of a spiral-shaped shaft and a head. The shaft fits into a work piece and is held in place by the head. A screw is technically a metal pin with incised threads and a broad slotted head that can be driven as a fastener by turning with a screwdriver.

Screws

Screws can be composed of various materials including steel, stainless steel, bonze, brass, titanium, zinc and chromium. Plastic screws are also common, though their use tends to be restricted to more light-duty applications compared to metal screws. The main application for screws is as threaded fasteners. Threaded fasteners are very important utilities throughout industry and commerce as well as in consumer products contexts. Screws are used in the construction of buildings, vehicles, furniture, door hardware, lamp posts, eyeglasses, staplers and an extensive variety of other products. Screws are essential utilities in electronics, building, manufacturing, repair service, metal fabricating and a wide variety of other industries. Screws can be designed to a wide variety of specifications; the most complex and unusual specialty screws can be custom made in metalworking facilities, and the most basic screw designs, like decking screws, can be bought in large volumes at modest prices from fastener suppliers.

Threaded industrial fasteners, including screws, contain spiral ridges called threads, which aid in their attachment and the retention of the connection they create. A thread formed on the top of the head is specifically formed to mate with a screwdriver. Such threads can be as simple as slots, or they can be cross-shaped, square, hexagonal or many other shapes. The two main types of screws, machine and wood screws, are both made of metal. They differ in that machine screws have a constant diameter and join with nuts while wood screws are tapered and grip to the actual wood surface. The threads on a screw can run right handed or left, tapered, straight or parallel. Right-hand threads cause screws to be tightened when turned clockwise, while left-hand threads tighten in the opposite direction. Carefully pairing screws with their applications is important in ensuring the effectiveness and longevity of the screws and the connections they help to create. When chosen and installed correctly, screws can be expected to perform their designated tasks for a very long time.
