PCB Connectors

PCB (printed circuit board) connectors refer to a type of electronic connector that is used to transmit electrical signals between either two printed circuit boards or a printed circuit board and another type of electric circuit. A printed circuit board is a device used to mechanically support as well as electronically connect various electrical components by means of conductive pathways that are etched into copper sheets and then laminated onto a non-conductive material known as a substrate.

PCB Connectors

Typically, a PCB connector is a permanent type of wire electronic connector (instead of a temporary or portable electronic connector) that is adhered to the printed circuit board by means of soldering, which is a process used to fasten together two or more metal items through melting and applying a filler metal into the joint or area of connection. Printed circuit boards are vital to parts of many, if not all, electronic devices, thus, PCB connectors are utilized in a vast range of applications and industries including: residential, for use in devices such as home computers, HVAC systems and household electrical transmission; electronics, in which printed circuit boards, and thus PCB connectors, are used in almost every type of electrical device; automotive, used for electrical components in cars such as sensors and instrument panels; and industrial, used in automated machinery such as computer numerical control (CNC) machines.

Also known as printed wiring boards (PWBs) or etched wiring board (EWBs), printed circuit boards are available in a wide range of configurations, the most basic of which are single-sided, double-sided and multi-layered. In addition to numerous configurations of printed circuit boards, PCB connectors are also manufactured in a variety of styles. Some of the most common configurations of PCB connectors are one-piece receptacles or a two-piece plug and jack style. An edge PCB connector is referred to as such when the foil of the printed circuit board of a one-piece receptacle PCB connector is extended in order to cover the edge of the board; once done, it is directly mounted into the receptacle of the connector, often through a bonding process, such as soldering. In plug-and-jack PCB connectors, the two-piece style of PCB connectors also requires soldering of the connector, though in this case of the connectors' jack, which is bonded to the edge of the printed circuit board, thus mating with a receptacle or plug. There are two main types of plug-and-jack PCB connectors: Eurocard PCB connectors and DIN format PCB connectors. Eurocard connectors are based upon standards established by the European Union (EU), whereas DIN format connectors are based upon standards established by the Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN), which is a German organization.
