Electrical discharge machines are used to create both simple and complex
cutouts within parts and assemblies. Electrical discharge machines consist
of a workpiece and an electrode. Metal is removed from the workpiece by a series
of rapid electrical arcing discharges between the workpiece and the electrode.
The cutting tool is guided along the desired pattern, but never touches the
material being cut. The particles which are removed from the workpiece are
washed away by a continuously flowing dielectric (non-conductive) fluid.
The two main types of electrical discharge machines are wire and sinker. Wire
machines are used to cut shapes through a part. If a cutout needs to be made
on the part, a hole is first drilled to accommodate the wire, after which the
cutting can begin. Sinkers are used for more complex shapes, and a machined
copper or graphite electrode cuts the desired shape into the part. Sinkers
can cut a hole into the part without pre-drilling.
Electrical discharge machines are used in many industries, including automotive,
chemical and aerospace. Electrical discharge machining is affordable and a
desirable process when high accuracy is required and a low number of parts
are being dealt with.
