Finishing Equipment

Finishing equipment refers to the machinery that polishes, coats, burnishes and deburrs parts and materials in order to remove unwanted surface defects such as raised edges on a part, which are referred to as burrs. This process of vibratory finishing is important to many industries as burrs occur in almost every type of plastic and metal machining operation including welding, drilling, turning, engraving and etching.

Finishing Equipment

Finishing equipment and deburring machines are utilized for diverse applications in industries such as: electronics, for use in protective coating applications such as electromagnetic interference; industrial, for use in manufacturing and assembly applications in various machine and job shops; retail, for jewelry polishing applications; mining, for prospecting of rocks and fine metals such as gold; transportation, for automotive applications including truck engines, automotive components and even airplane parts. In order to meet the needs of so many industries, there are three types of finishing equipment for deburring applications: rotational, vibrating and centrifugal disc.

The first two types of finishing equipment for deburring applications are similar in construction and basic design. The major different between the two is the method of movement each uses to produce friction and grinding between the parts being finished and the finishing media. Rotational finishing equipment is constructed from a hexagonal or cylindrical tumbler, a base, a drive, a motor and gear assembly. In order to enable deburring to occur, the rotary finishing machine uses rotational movement along with abrasive tumbling media such as steel, ceramics, plastics and organic materials such as corn cob and walnut shells. While vibratory finishing equipment is constructed from many of the same parts: a barrel, a base, a motor and a drive, they do not require moving parts. Vibratory finishing equipment enables deburring by agitating in a side-to-side motion at high rates of speed, causing continuous grinding between the enclosed parts. Centrifugal disc finishing equipment however, is capable of up to ten times higher the grinding power of rotary or vibratory finishing machinery. The design of the centrifugal disc finishing machine is very similar to that of rotary and vibratory equipment. In the centrifugal disc machine, there is a base with a lift and tilt top plate and bowl. This is constructed from welded steel material, typically with a plastic liner formed from a polymer such as polyurethane. Attached to the base is a motor and a switch which powers the machine, and the spinner disc inside is driven by a gear and a belt pulley system, allowing it to achieve a high grinding power.
