Deburring Machines

Deburring machines are used in the process of finishing parts which have been extruded, forged or machined. During the fabrication process, parts often acquire sharp raised edges or seams where they have been drilled, machined, stamped or forged; these "burrs" must be removed in order for the part to function properly and safely. This process of removing burrs, buffing, polishing and sometimes coating parts is called finishing; deburring machines are an essential part of this process.

Deburring machines may be simple, hand-held tools or they may be entire automated robotic systems with wheels, belts and vibrating tools. A common type of deburring machine used for mass parts finishing is the vibratory finisher, a large drum which vibrates small ceramic, metal or plastic media pieces together with unfinished parts; this process exfoliates and buffs burrs and imperfections from part surfaces. Vibratory finishers made for mass finishing are often manufactured as combos which contain multiple vibrating media sections and conveyor systems, allowing parts to be deburred, cleaned, coated and sorted all in one machine. Tumblers are very similar machines, although they are usually only composed of a simple vibrating drum or rotating drum which also uses tumbling and deburring media to finish parts.

Large unfinished parts which cannot be mass finished require a different type of deburring machinery, often an automated deburring cabinet or benchtop machine which uses various wheels, belts and abrasive to smooth burrs and polish rough edges. Lathes are sometimes designed to deburr or polish parts. Some automated finishing equipment uses robotic technology with finishing wheels or belts to precisely deburr and polish larger parts, such as gears. Wet tumbling media is sometimes added in the finishing process as a protective coating or coloring agent; wet media can be used in both vibratory finishing equipment and non-vibratory equipment.
