Workstation Cranes

Workstation cranes are designed in many configurations and are used in many different ways. The smallest workstation cranes are typically jib cranes or small, free-standing gantry cranes. Jib cranes feature a single lifting arm mounted on a single support; a winch or hoist is mounted on the lifting arm. The arms can be made to rotate, or they can be made for movement back in forth in only one axis. These are used for the movement of heavy objects over short distances; they are used frequently in automotive repair for the mounting of heavy engine parts. Gantry cranes are larger and allow for movement in both axes. Gantry cranes feature a stand made of several girders in a square or rectangular frame. Another girder, which is mounted on rollers, is laid across those girders, and a winch or hoist is mounted on top of that girder. These are used for more complex movements, usually that of heavier equipment over larger distances. Other gantry crane and bridge crane varieties can be connected to a building's structural elements.

Workstation cranes can be used to lift between 150 and 4,000 pounds at one time and are usually made from steel or aluminum. They can be easy to relocate, except in the case of structurally supported cranes, and are mostly used by construction and manufacturing industries in factories, plants and warehouses. Ceiling-supported cranes feature an I beam with tracks mounted to strong, reinforced ceilings. They save space by keeping floor areas clear, and although they are mounted securely, some ceiling-supported workstation crane configurations can be relocated. Free-standing workstation cranes have a metal structure with one to four supporting legs that may have wheels. These small, modular cranes easily move around a facility and are able to expand and contract as needed. Their use requires concrete reinforced floors, and they can sometimes be fully automated. In every context in which workstation cranes are used, all materials must be carefully chosen, and all employees must be trained extensively in order to ensure safe and effective crane operation. Crane failure can cause injury and product loss; effective operations make use of cranes only after investing sufficiently in safety measures.
