White Cardboard Boxes

White cardboard boxes are used in file storage, magazine organization, as gift boxes sold in department and clothing stores, cake and bakery boxes, jewelry boxes and as durable shipping containers. Like all cardboard, white cardboard is often made from recycled paper and is recyclable itself. It is not considered to be a permanent container material, and it is inexpensive compared to other packing materials like wood and metal. They are usually square and can be of single configuration with flaps that fold into one another, or they can be constructed of two pieces and a removable lid. They are usually sold in bulk bundles to the food processing, baking, jeweler, grocery, retail and clothing industries, among others. White cardboard tends to be a little more expensive than brown cardboard because it requires bleaching, dying or a coating to give the boxes' exterior a white colored finish. In order to look even nicer, many boxes are coated with a glossy or shiny finish that also acts as a waterproof protective coating.

The white color is added to cardboard surfaces one of two ways: bleaching or mottling. If bleached, the dark brown color of the cardboard is subjected to harsh bleaching chemicals that remove the pigment. Surfacants and defoamers are often added to the bleaching chemical to improve the speed and quality of the coloring process. Mottling is another popular option that forms a spotted pattern printed on the cardboard's surface. A single color of white ink is applied to the brown cardboard with a sponge or a fiber spray. This process is advantageous because it does not involve the use of harsh chemicals. However, it can wear away easier. Besides looking smoother and more attractive than standard brown, rough cardboard, white cardboard boxes are popular because they are easily written on with pen or permanent marker; any text, whether hand written or on a surface sticker, label or adhesive is much more visible against a white background than the dark brown alternative. Like all cardboard boxes, they are sold in bulk bundles and folded into a box shape by the buyer.
