Corrugated Shipping Boxes

Corrugated shipping boxes are used to ship any type of item via ground, air or other transport methods. The item being shipped is carefully packed into a corrugated box, often using cushioning material. Once the item is loaded, the box is sealed with tape, staples or adhesive and sent on its way.

Industry Information

Corrugated Shipping Boxes

Corrugated shipping boxes are sturdy and made from corrugated paperboard. Often, corrugated box manufacturers print labels, warnings and other text on boxes used for shipping. Corrugated shipping boxes are chosen based on need for size, shipping method and load type. There are three load types commonly known in the handling and shipping industry. Easy loads are items of moderate density that may completely fill a container or be packaged in interior boxes. The items in an easy load do not shift easily, and they resist impact. Average loads are moderately concentrated items that provide only partial support to all sides of the container. Difficult loads are items that require a high degree of care and protection. They may be bulky or fragile, and they do not support their container.

Corrugated shipping boxes are relatively light-weight, inexpensive and can be re-used. Corrugated boxes may come in a range of sizes, from 4 x 4 x 4 to 48 x 48 x 48 and larger. Once they have served their purpose, the boxes can be recycled, making them more environmentally-friendly than some other packaging. Corrugated plastic boxes, for example, can be more durable and moisture-resistant than cardboard, but some varieties are more difficult to recycle than cardboard. The cost of corrugated boxes is also lower than many other kinds of shipping containers. One of the other principal benefits of corrugated shipping boxes is their low contribution to overall shipping costs. Especially in large-scale distribution operations, box weight can contribute substantially to shipping costs. Compared to heavier shipping container alternatives, corrugated containers contribute only minimally to such expenses. When a corrugated box does reach the end of its usable life, it does not incur significant expense for its user; instead, it can be replaced by an inexpensive, identical container, and the old container can be recycled. For these and many other reasons, corrugated shipping boxes are usually the shipping container of choice for most applications.
